Your Pain Body and Your Joy Body

Almost everyone carries accumulations of old emotional pain, what Eckhart Tolle calls the “pain-body.” This pain body feeds on negative thinking and drama in relationships. It is an energy field of its own, with 

“…its own primitive intelligence, not unlike a cunning animal...the food it requires to replenish itself consists of energy that is compatible with its own, which is to say, energy that vibrates at a similar frequency. Any emotionally painful experience can be used as food by the pain-body.”


Similarly, what I call your “joy-body” contains all the love, wonderful experiences, and associated emotions that you have collected over the years. 

Like the pain body, your joy-body stores family, ancestral, and collective joy. It feeds on positive, transporting experience. 

The importance of this to your living energy, your power to promote change in your emotional responses, and the creativity at the heart of your universe is profound. You have a choice about what energy you feed, what energy you eat, and how you digest what comes your way! 

Discreation Visualization to Free Your Joy

This is a fun and easy way to release the energy of a belief that no longer serves you, that you no longer want. 

I’ve found that therapy and analysis helps us to identify what’s wrong, but often keeps us stuck in our mental constructs. Discreating the belief often works better, and frees you to be more joyful.

You’ll notice that you need intent: if you are ambivalent about letting the belief go, you may be popping the bubble forever!

Children like releasing their fears this way. (They are usually better than adults at naming the feeling behind the belief.)

Here’s how to discreate a belief using visualization:

Choose a belief you want to discreate. Feel it, experience it in your body. Give the feeling a name.

See the name inside a bubble. Watch the bubble float up, up into the sky and away from you. Watch it go as far as you are able into the sky. When you can barely see it, pop the bubble with a pin. You can say “this is not me, this is my creation” if you want.

Repeat: watch the bubble float away. Pop the bubble when you can barely see it. Repeat again and again until you can’t feel the belief inside you anymore. You will feel the shift in your body as the thought loses its energy and power.

Celebrate the spaciousness in your body!
Repeat over and over until the thought loses its energy and power. You will feel the shift in your body.

Five Powerful Ways to Feed Your Joy Body

  1. Instead of identifying and labeling your emotions, instead of telling your stories of hurt and betrayal over and over again, you can work with the energy itself.
  2. You can learn to notice energy that no longer serves you, release it, and fill with something lighter. When you view everything as just energy, there’s no judgment. Just as you blow out one breath to take in another, you can release the heavy to make space for the light.
  3. Every meditation practice teaches that your feelings and reactions arise, then change, then change again; your pain and mental responses are not you.
  4. This point of view offers you freedom to move in and out of feeling states with fluidity; to change your energy; and to avoid getting stuck in those “heavy” and redundant thoughts that occupy 75% of your thinking.
  5. Instead, fluid awareness, gratefulness, and joy can become your state of mind.
