Visualizing yourself spinning is an easy, wonderful way to release your dense energies—heaviness, doubt, distraction, or whatever is getting in the way—so you can be clear, present, and open. Imagine the water flying off lettuce in a salad spinner—that’s what it can feel like as you spin off stuff from your body and mind.
My cohort of light workers has been using spinning for years. We use it to spin off whatever is going to keep us from full presence and open-heartedness: family burdens, world chaos, or narratives of separation. We use it to get clear in the middle of difficult interactions. We use it after long discussions, to spin off all the thoughts in our heads and get back to essentials!
A weight or contraction (feeling small or “not good enough”) may notify you that you need to spin. Ditto an inability to focus, whether in your life or your contemplative practice. Whenever you notice that feeling of being off-center, you can use spinning to find equanimity. Regular spinning will smooth your energy field and build your coherence.
These instructions are for spinning by visualizing. You can accomplish the same clarity with literal, physical spinning, as Sufis do.
Focus on your personal coherence point, which is just outside your heart center, slightly to the left of your breastbone. Your coherence point is your anchor for spinning. This point varies slightly from person to person, so choose where it feels right to you.
See yourself spinning out from and around your coherence point. Let go and let the spinning take you. You’ll feel it in your body and see yourself at the same time. Your body will circle around in bigger and bigger concentric circles, speeding up and slowing down as needed. You may “see” large or small pieces of stuff flying away. You’ll come to a natural stop when it’s time, when your body has let go of whatever it needed to release. Notice the difference in your breathing and energy flow.
