When someone is suffering, your balance and open-heartedness can make a huge difference—in your response to them, and in their experience of support. When the world is suffering, our collective balance and our collective open-heartedness can shift the energies of the world. Whether you are a lightworker, shamanic practitioner, or ordinary person, you know that the energy you bring to the world affects the world. This is one of those times when your community and the world need you! The old shamanic rainmaker story expresses and captures the importance of finding energetic balance to affect change. It reminds me of what is essential for us to do.
A small village, suffering from an extended drought, begged a healer in a nearby district to come help them. When the healer arrived, he asked to stay in a small hut on the edge of the village and have food left outside his door each day. He requested that no one disturb him. Each day the villagers woke, hoping for rain clouds, but the skies remained blue and clear, as they had for months. On the third morning, they woke to the sound of raindrops. Rushing outside, smiling and laughing, they cheered as the healer entered the village. "Oh, you are a great rainmaker," they exclaimed. "No, I am not a rainmaker," he replied. "I come from a region where everything is in balance. When I entered your village three days ago, I saw that things were out of balance. All I did was sit and return myself to balance. Once I was in balance, the elements could work as they should and bring the rain you need." The story reminds us that, "as within, so without," as the medieval alchemists used to say. How we carry ourselves in the world affects our own health, the people around us, and the world itself.
I’ve recently returned from a week with my extended family, many of whom I had not seen for more than ten years. Balance was certainly on my agenda: while the time with my two grand-nieces was wonderful, I was thrown into some very old reactions by some of my interactions. One night I woke filled with heaviness, upset, and anxiety. I was pretty surprised—all my years of practicing Energy Alchemy usually help me get through and finished with my reactivity pretty quickly. Not this time. I took to my journal, writing and writing until I got beyond the “poor-me” responses and into the root cause. Once again, I felt that I wasn’t enough. In retrospect, I feel compassion for myself: I was doing the best I could. I just forgot what some of the dynamics were like. I had to observe, once again, so I could separate what was mine from what belonged to the others—their personalities, habits, perceptions, whatever drives them to act the way they do. Then I could release my own heaviness and get back into balance.
Our spirit teachers continually remind us that we can find balance through nature connection: they tell us to breathe with the earth, breathe with the trees, breathe with the mountains, and breathe with the universe. Eagle and Condor say: "breathing in resonance is how we come together." For me, this is what is so powerful about the ancient wisdom for releasing, filling and connecting that I call Energy Alchemy. When connections with people challenge me, I gather and exchange energy with the universe until I feel whole again. In the web of light—Gaia consciousness, or the great living consciousness of the earth—everything is in balance. To stay in personal balance, we need only stay connected to this web of "living energy" as the Q'ero call it. My passion about sharing shamanic and energy practices comes from the alignment, balance, and joy I have found in the work.
