Five Ways To Survive These Challenging Times

How are you navigating these challenging times?

When you come out of a blissful meditation and are knocked sideways within five minutes, what then?

How do you deflect the anxiety you see in your family, on the road, in the grocery store, in yourself?

If everyone you run into seems overwhelmed, afraid, or in grief, how can you maintain your equanimity?

The wisdom and practice of ancient cultures offer balm and guidance. I draw on them because, like everyone, I don’t have answers. You may “know” these five ways; this is a reminder to put them into practice!

Five Ways To Survive…and Move Through the World with Grace

Finding moments of peace, renewal, and connection is essential to all of us, now more than ever.

What’s most important: You have a sacred calling. You have special gifts you bring to the world. If you are off balance your gifts won’t flow.

Help yourself get back on track with these five simple ways of surviving and thriving.

Survive and Thrive: 1

Whatever calming practices work for you, do them more often.

For example, all of these help you shift your awareness and be in the present:

  • Meditate often during the day, not just once.

  • Take stretching breaks.

  • Go outside and notice the beautiful sky.

  • Breathe deeply, consciously drawing in fresh air and blowing out the old.

Survive and Thrive:  2

Release, consciously, whatever is weighing you down.

For example:

  • When you see the waning full moon each night (right now, and for another week), set your own intent to minimize something in your life that weighs you down.

  • Breathe your heaviness into the sun to transform, or into the air to float away.

  • Lie flat on the earth and let everything go; then draw in the nourishing energy of the Mother.

  • Apologize if you lose it. The recipient is probably just as stressed as you, and will appreciate being able to forgive and forget.

Survive and Thrive:  3 

Forgive yourself for not doing enough, not being enough, or being too tired or scared to speak up.

When my friend had her 50th birthday, she received this great advice: “Remember, you have always done the best you can.”

Letting go of regret frees you to be and do as much as you can in this moment.

Survive and Thrive:  4

Feed your vision—the beautiful, joyful dreams you have—for yourself, family, community, and earth.

This will help you break your habits of doom and gloom.

Connecting with the lighter, more refined energy of dreams and visions will help you feel better, stronger, more clear. Then you can get back to being in the world with a big heart.

It’s a big challenge! Just this morning a friend and I spoke about her fear. She said, “Yes, it makes sense to release my fear.” Yet five minutes later she was railing again, fueling her anxiety instead of her vision. Habits!

Survive and Thrive:  5

Reach out and connect beyond your usual circles.

  • Smile at everyone

  • Chat with someone you don’t know well. Connect, and listen!

  • Look for commonalities with someone you think of as different

  • Model gratitude whenever you speak. It’s catching!

Think of how you feel when someone drives by you, smiling. It’s the domino effect: they smile, you smile, someone else sees you and smiles.

You can feed these small moments that have big repercussions—the butterfly effect brought into our daily lives.
