All spiritual work begins with sacred space. Every day I experience the power of healing in sacred space, so I want to share one pattern you can use.
Creating sacred space—by inviting the spirits of the land, the elements and four directions, your ancestors and descendants, all the living beings who inhabit a place, the little people, your guides and power animals, and the inter-dimensional beings who are waiting to support you—is a way to create a rich field of energy, awareness, collaboration, and alignment for your spiritual work.
By creating a sacred circle with your allies, you create a supportive field, gather power, raise and shift energy, and engage in reciprocity. You feel bigger, more present, more connected. You establish a protected space—a platform, as it’s called in Reiki—in which you can work without the intrusion of uninvited influences. You expand your consciousness and open a thread beyond the space/time continuum. In other words, sacred space is a field of energy where you experience yourself within the web, connected through your love of the earth, connected through your energy, connected with all your allies and helpers.
This is the pattern I use. It will give you one idea of how to begin creating sacred space for your spiritual work—healing, meditating, journeying, singing, ceremony. Creating sacred space with your heart engaged helps you feel deeply aligned with spirit and makes your work feel alive. Here's how:
Rattling, drumming, or with a song in your heart, face east. Invite in the element of air, the birds that are your allies, and a few of the qualities of the east. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence and are connected in your heart.
Turn and face the south. Rattling or drumming, invite in the element of fire, the south-associated animals that are your allies, and a few of the qualities of the south. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence and are connected in your heart.
Turn and face the west. Rattling or drumming, invite in the element of water, the west-associated animals that are your allies, and a few of the qualities of the west. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence and are connected in your heart.
Turn and face the north. Rattling or drumming, invite in the element of earth, the north-associated animals that are your allies, and a few of the qualities of the north. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence and are connected in your heart.
Turn and face the center. Rattling or drumming to the sky, invite the ancestors. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence. Rattling or drumming to the earth in the center, invite the descendants. Continue rattling or drumming until you feel their presence and are connected in your heart.
When you have completed your work, be sure to open the circle counterclockwise, moving center-north-west-south-east, and thanking all the beings who joined you.
