Eating and composting the heavy energy of other people and situations is a wonderful practice for clearing the field around you and creating space for community healing.
Instead of releasing your own heaviness*, you channel any heaviness outside of you—rage, drama, terror, trauma, anger, tension, grief—back into the earth.
A field of energy is what we create, consciously or unconsciously, when we’re in group situations. Office meetings, sports events, protests, parties, meditation gatherings, family dinners, yoga classes, and motorcycle gangs all have energy fields.
The energy in a field shifts and moves, just like our own. The meeting or family dinner may get tense or sad. The protest may turn peaceful or become violent. Anytime the field becomes weighed down, it’s hard to make decisions, move to a better space, or solve a problem.
When others are emoting heaviness, you can silently feed and gift their dense energy back to the earth. This moves the energy in the collective field, releases it like compost, makes our own hearts more available for compassionate witnessing, and lightens the situation for everyone.
Intent is key. As you learn to monitor your own energy and your field, you get better at noticing what is not yours, but is muddying the field around you. In an office meeting, for example, your body tension may be an internal reaction to a person or statement, and/or it may mirror the general tension in the room. If you are able to step back, feed the tension to the earth, and continue letting it pass through your “energetic stomach,” the energy in your body and in the room will change.
In this practice, it is important to be aware of what you are “eating,” and not do too much. If you experience a big sadness in your community, for example, release as much as you can to the earth, but don’t exhaust yourself. Come back to working on the heaviness energetically when you can, offering the heaviness and calling in the lighter energy of love, or of the heavens, or of the surrounding elements.
Many people worry about giving heavy energy to the earth, but it is just energy: the earth does not distinguish between coffee grounds and sadness, or corn husks and anger. (Toxins and pesticides are a different story, since they affect many living beings.) Energy flows constantly. Whether it is heavy or light from a human perspective; it is really just energy.
Imagine this: you are at the site of a disaster. Terror, sadness, and trauma are everywhere. If one person (you) uses this practice, the field right around you will feel a little better. If 100 people, or 1,000, use this practice, there will be space for everyone to take a deep breath, have a moment of spaciousness, and refocus.
Visualize an energetic channel, just beyond your belly, leading into the earth.
Gather and send the heaviness around you down this channel into the earth.
Draw up lighter energy from the rich, nurturing earth, filling your cells frequently.
Keep gathering, feeding, and filling.
Continue this exchange of releasing and filling until the air clears or you cannot maintain your focus.
